KS1 Phonics and Reading
Phonics
Foundation Stage and Key Stage One use the Sounds Write phonic programme.
Sounds-Write’s instructional method works effectively because it:
- can be easily implemented in the classroom with the minimum of expense, planning and preparation
- provides clearly structured, easy-to-follow lesson plans
- is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers in YR, Y1 and Y2
- offers fast and highly effective intervention for children at all levels who have fallen behind in their reading and spelling
- is a real phonic programme that teaches in simple steps how the sounds of the language are represented by the writing system
- places emphasis on giving practice that is grounded in physical, concrete experience of the ideas and conceptual understanding the pupils need to assimilate
- teaches the three essential skills of segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation necessary for reading and spelling throughout the programme on a daily basis until all pupils achieve the automaticity that underlies the fluency of every successful reader.

There are five Key Stage Two members of staff trained in the ‘Sounds Write’ programme and will deliver specific Catch-Up phonics programmes in Key Stage Two.
Reading Schemes
In order to ensure that children have a variety of texts available for both their reading level and areas of interest, we invest heavily in books for the school. We use texts from a range of reading schemes rather than follow a particular scheme as we believe this is the best way to ensure the texts we offer meet the needs of all pupils. Schemes we currently have in school include (not exclusively):
- Oxford Reading Tree
- Songbirds Phonics
- Collins Big Cat
- Rigby Star
- Tree Tops
- Project X
We have also heavily invested in a range of Sounds Write and Dandelion Reader texts for pupils in Reception and Key Stage One, the use of these texts are prioritised but pupils may also be given books from other reading schemes to supplement these as required. Pupils in Key Stage Two who are receiving catch-up phonic interventions will also bring home a Sounds Write reading book.
We also have a range of digital reading resources and interventions in school including Reading Plus, Teach Monster and Nessy.
