Attendance & Punctuality
Newport Primary School is committed to ensuring that all of our children receive the best possible Education.
At Newport Primary School, we work collaboratively with our families to ensure that children are in school. When children aren’t in school they are missing out on important learning opportunities and time spent establishing relationships with their peers.
If you require any support or have any questions in relation to school attendance, our Attendance Officer is Miss Keegan. She can be contacted via telephone on 01642 861911.

Attendance Matters
If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please contact school every morning before 9am on 01642 861911 and provide a reason for absence.
Working Together to Improve Attendance
Newport Primary School is legally required to work alongside the Local Authority to promote the importance of regular school attendance. We monitor and share absence details with Local Authorities should legal proceedings be considered.
If your child is absent, school will either mark the absence as authorised or unauthorised. School can only authorise an absence if a reason is provided and they are too unwell to attend school or has a medical appointment that cannot be taken after school or in the holidays.
If your child’s attendance falls below 90%, you will receive a letter from school requesting supporting documents such as; a pharmacy receipt, prescription, appointment cards or text message from a GP or Medical provider in order for the absence to be authorised.
If attendance does not improve then we will refer this to our Education Welfare Officer and a formal plan will be put in place to support you to improve your child’s attendance. If this does not happen it could lead to fines and/or court action.
Please be assured that we are here to support you, if you need help to improve your child’s attendance, please contact Miss Keegan.
School Readiness
It is important that your child arrives at school on time every day. If your child is late, they are not ready for their day which can be quite unsettling for them. We have provided a table below to show how lateness can impact on a child’s school life and missed learning opportunities that occur as a result.

Term Time Holidays
We kindly ask that families book their holidays during the school holidays to avoid receiving a fixed penalty notice from the Local Authority and the impact it will have on your child’s attendance and learning lost during this time.
If you choose to take your child on a term time holiday you must complete a leave of absence in advance. Due to new government guidance schools cannot authorise term time holidays. School must make the local authority aware and this could result in a fine or court action.
